Overview

In the bag is a Design Against Crime Research Lab (DACRL) research resource designed to help designers quickly understand issues related to pick-pocketing, bag theft, and the loss of personal items. It visually presents statistical and criminological data, combined with contextual information directly relevant to design.

The resource was bolstered by previous research DACRL had undertaken during practice-led projects including Grippa, Stop Thief and Karrysafe.

Outputs

The resource offers a thoroughly referenced research foundation for those interested in exploring the subject at an academic level. It addresses the challenge of designing out crime by providing insights that enable designers to be more creative than criminals. The resource helps designers create objects, environments, and services that address both users and potential abusers without stigmatising them.

In the bag aims to inspire designers by providing the right information to make a difference. It includes new design work inspired by the research and offers a range of takeaway DAC briefs that challenge designers to innovate and contribute to crime prevention.

Impact

The resource was first exhibited on a computer at the Design Museum in London as part of the In the Bag and Off the Wall expo and subsequently in further international exhibitions. Grippa, Stop Thief and Karrysafe are amongst the products designed utilising information from the In the Bag resource and subsequently exhibited.

The Stop Thief Chair was featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2005 and is now part of MoMA’s permanent collection. The Grippa is also slowly becoming a permanent fixture on London’s cafe scene as a more secure bag clip to protect belongings and keep cafes tidy. The Design Council, AHRC and the Jill Dando Institute through multiple grants and research projects that assess these products’ effectiveness in everyday environments have promoted both the Stop Thief Chair and the Grippa Clip. These products were also trialled with established cafe chains/bars in order to address bag theft problems.
